The Project

A bowing railroad-tie wall in Azle, rebuilt in engineered stone

A homeowner in Azle called us about an aging railroad-tie retaining wall that was leaning hard toward the yard and starting to give way. Someone had wedged stacks of brick underneath to hold it up — a sure sign the wall had already lost the fight with the soil behind it.

Timber and railroad-tie walls have a shelf life in North Texas. Our expansive clay soil swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it’s dry, and that constant push eventually rots, bows, and topples wood. We replaced this one with a stone-faced wall engineered on a poured footing with built-in drainage — a wall built to outlast the house it protects.

This is one of many projects behind our retaining wall installation work — browse more completed projects across the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex.

Why Stone, and Why It Lasts

Engineered for North Texas clay soil

The reason so many retaining walls fail across the DFW metroplex comes down to one thing: expansive clay soil. Much of North Texas sits on the Blackland Prairie clays, which swell when it rains and shrink as they dry out in the Texas heat. That endless swell-and-shrink cycle puts enormous lateral pressure on any wall holding soil back.

Timber and railroad-tie walls simply aren’t built for it — the wood rots at the base, the ties bow, and the wall leans until it fails. A properly engineered stone wall solves it three ways:

  • A poured footing sized for the soil load, so the wall has a stable base that resists shifting.
  • Weep holes and drainage built into the wall, so water moves through instead of building up behind it.
  • Millsap stone over a solid core — a material that holds up to Texas weather and complements North Texas homes.

Done right, the wall doesn’t just hold back soil — it protects the foundation, controls erosion, and turns an unusable slope into level, usable yard.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★I can’t recommend Nathan and the entire crew at DFW Retaining Walls enough! We had a large railroad tie retaining wall in our backyard that after almost 40 years was showing its age. All permits and interactions with the city were taken care of, and I never had to get involved. The final product is nothing short of amazing — the wall looks great and was completed quickly.

Common Questions

Retaining walls in Azle & DFW — FAQ

How long does a retaining wall take?
Most residential walls are completed in a few days once permits are in hand. At your free estimate we’ll give you a realistic timeline for your specific wall.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. We pull and manage every required permit for your retaining wall — it’s all included, and you never deal with the paperwork.
Why do retaining walls fail in North Texas?
Expansive clay soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry, pushing constantly against the wall. Walls without a proper footing and drainage — especially wood and railroad-tie walls — bow and fail over time.
Is there a warranty?
Every retaining wall we build comes with a 5-year written warranty, on top of guaranteed pricing so the quote is the bill.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Estimates are free, and we can usually get to you the same or next day — the owner, Nathan, comes out personally.
