Reclaiming a Bedford backyard from an aging pool
This Bedford homeowner was done pouring time and money into an in-ground pool that had stopped getting used — the water had gone green, debris was collecting, and it had become a liability more than an amenity.

Taking out an in-ground pool is more than knocking a hole in the shell. Done wrong, the ground sinks and settles for years and can become a problem when you sell. Done right, you get a clean, stable, usable yard.
There are two approaches, and we’ll walk you through which fits your property and budget:
- Partial removal — the top of the pool is demolished, the shell is drilled for drainage, and the cavity is filled and compacted. Faster and more affordable.
- Full removal — the entire pool structure is broken out and hauled away before backfill. Best when you want to build on the spot later.
Either way, the difference between a good job and a bad one is engineered backfill and compaction — filling in the right lifts of soil, compacted properly, then graded so water drains away.
