The old fence along this Dallas alley had weathered grey and was leaning out of line, standing on a crosstie wall that was giving way beneath it. Both came out. A mortared stone retaining wall with weep holes now holds the yard, and a new 8-foot cedar fence with a double gate stands on top.

What We Found

This property backs onto an alley, with the yard sitting above the pavement. Along that edge an old board fence stood on a crosstie wall. The fence had weathered grey, its boards had gaps, and whole sections were leaning out of line.

Crossties are railroad ties, and as a retaining wall they have a limited life. The timber rots where it meets wet soil, and Dallas clay keeps it wet. As the ties give, everything on top of them moves, which is why the fence was leaning with them.

The decision: fix the base, then the fence

A new fence on the old crossties would have leaned again within a few seasons, because the problem was underneath it. So both came out together.

The crossties were replaced with a mortared stone wall, and a new 8-foot fence was built on top of it. The fence now has a solid, permanent base, and the extra height gives the yard more privacy from the alley.

How the Build Ran

  1. Quote and permits

Nathan walked the alley with the owners and gave one written, guaranteed price for the wall and fence. Permits were pulled and managed by us.

  2. Old fence and ties out

The leaning fence was taken down and the rotting crossties removed along the full run.

  3. Stone wall

A mortared natural stone retaining wall went in along the alley, with weep holes through the face near the base.

  4. New 8' fence

A new 8-foot cedar board fence on steel posts was built along the wall, with a double gate to the alley.

The Result

The alley side of the property now has a straight stone base and a tall, square fence on top of it. The fence runs true because what it stands on no longer moves.

The weep holes let water out from behind the stone, so the clay cannot build the pressure that rotted and pushed the crossties. The owners also gained a taller fence and a proper gate.

Dallas Retaining Wall Questions

Why was the fence leaning?

Because the crosstie wall under it was failing. When the ties rot and shift, the fence on top moves with them. Replacing only the fence would not have fixed it; the base had to be replaced first.

Can you replace a retaining wall and a fence in one job?

Yes. On this Dallas job the crosstie wall and the old fence came out together, and a stone wall and a new 8-foot fence went in. One visit, one written price.

How long do crosstie retaining walls last?

Crossties rot where they touch wet soil, and Dallas clay holds moisture against them. Many residential crosstie walls are failing by the time the fence on top starts to lean. Nathan can tell you where yours stands at the free quote.

What are the small holes along the bottom of the wall?

Weep holes. They let water drain out from behind the stone so pressure cannot build up in the clay. Walls without drainage are the ones that lean and crack.

Do you handle permits in Dallas?

Yes. We check what the City of Dallas requires for the work, pull whatever is needed and manage any inspection. You never deal with the paperwork.

What does a wall and fence replacement cost?

It depends on the length and height of the wall, the stone, and the fence. Nathan gives a firm written price at the free on-site visit, and that price is the bill.
