The same stretch after: a Milsap stone wall with drain outlets, fence still standing.

The wall under this alley fence was built from horizontal 2×4 boards, the kind of wood wall that rots from the soil side first. It was replaced with a mortared Milsap stone wall with drain outlets through the face, and the fence above stayed in place.

What We Found

This wall runs along an alley behind a Plano home, where the yard sits higher than the pavement. A tall board fence stands on top of it. Holding the soil under that fence was a wall made of 2×4 boards stacked on edge between the fence’s steel posts.

A board wall is cheap to build and short-lived. The soil side stays wet, and Plano’s Blackland clay holds water against the wood. It rots from the back, where nobody can see it, until the boards bow and the soil starts to push through.

The decision: stone under the same fence

The fence itself was sound, so the owners kept it. The job was to take the wood out from underneath and put a permanent wall in its place, without taking the fence down.

Milsap stone was the natural choice. It is a dense Texas stone that will not rot, and mortared into a solid face it carries the soil and the fence line for good.

How the Build Ran

  1. Quote and permits

Nathan walked the alley with the owners, measured the run and gave a written, guaranteed price. Any permit was pulled and managed by us.

  2. Wood out

The 2×4 boards were removed in sections with the fence left standing on its posts.

  3. Stone wall

Milsap stone was laid and mortared along the fence line, with drain outlets set through the face near the base.

  4. Clean alley

Backfill settled behind the new wall, the strip along the alley tidied and the site left clean.

The Result

From the alley the fence looks the same, but it now stands on stone instead of boards. The Milsap face runs the full length of the lot and turns the corner with it.

There is no wood left in the ground to rot. The drain outlets let water out from behind the stone, so the clay cannot build up the pressure that pushed the boards out.

Plano Retaining Wall Questions

Can you replace a retaining wall without taking the fence down?

Often, yes. On this Plano job the fence stood on its own steel posts, so the boards could come out and the stone go in with the fence left standing. Nathan checks how your fence is supported at the free quote.

How long does a 2×4 wood retaining wall last?

Not long. The soil side stays damp and the wood rots from the back, often long before it shows from the front. Boards that are bowing or letting soil through are telling you the wall is near the end.

Why replace wood with Milsap stone?

Stone does not rot. Milsap is a dense natural Texas stone, and mortared into a wall it carries the load for decades. It also looks far better from the alley than bare boards.

What are the pipes along the bottom of the new wall?

They are drain outlets. They let water escape from behind the wall, so Plano’s clay soil cannot build up the pressure that pushes a wall out of line.

Do you handle the permit for an alley wall in Plano?

Yes. We check what the city requires, pull whatever is needed and manage any inspection. You never deal with the paperwork.

What does a wood-to-stone replacement cost?

It depends on the length and height of the wall and how the fence is supported. Nathan gives a firm written price at the free on-site visit, and that price is the bill.
